Why Builder’s Dust Keeps Coming Back After a Renovation

You wipe it down, go to bed, and there’s a fresh film on everything in the morning. That’s normal — and it’s why this clean is done differently.

Why it keeps settling

Plaster, sanding and cutting make dust far finer than normal household dust. It floats for hours, gets pulled into every room through gaps and vents, and settles slowly on every flat surface — including inside presses that were shut and under the dust sheets.

So the first wipe down always looks like it worked. Then the dust still in the air comes down overnight, and the dust in the vents, window tracks and radiators keeps coming out for days.

Why a hoover can make it worse

A lot of household hoovers don’t have a filter fine enough for this. They pull the dust in one end and blow the finest part back out the other, straight back into the air. It also clogs the filter and can burn out the motor. Builder’s dust needs a proper filtered machine.

Wiping with a dry cloth moves it around too. It needs damp cloths, rinsed and changed often.

How a proper after-builders clean goes

  • Top to bottom. Ceilings, light fittings, the tops of doors and presses first. Floors last, always.
  • Inside everything. Presses, drawers, wardrobes — the dust gets in even when they were closed.
  • The places dust hides. Radiators and the gaps behind them, extractor fans, vents, window tracks and sills, skirting, sockets and switches.
  • Paint splashes and plaster lifted off glass, tiles and floors without scratching them.
  • Kitchen and bathrooms brought to a standard you’d cook and shower in.
  • A final pass once everything has settled, because some of it will still come down.

When to book it

Once the last trade is gone and the paint is dry — not while the electrician is still finishing sockets. If the clean is done before the builders leave, you’ll be doing it twice.

If you’re moving furniture in, the ideal is: builders out, clean done, then the furniture. A new sofa carried into a dusty room takes the dust with it.

Is it worth paying for?

After spending what a renovation costs, the last thing you want is to live with a grey film on everything for a month. An after renovation clean gets the fine dust off every surface so you can move in properly. There’s a quick estimate on that page based on floor area and how much dust there is, and you get the fixed price before I start.

If the carpets or sofa caught it, carpet and upholstery cleaning takes the dust out of the fabric too.
