Pet urine smell in the sofa or carpet: why it comes back

You cleaned it. It smelled fine for a day. Then the room warmed up and there it was again. This is the most common soft-furnishing call I get, so here is what is actually going on.

Why it comes back

Urine doesn’t stay on the surface. It soaks through the fabric into the foam or the carpet underlay, and as it dries the uric acid crystals stay behind. Surface cleaning removes the top layer; the crystals underneath reactivate every time humidity rises. That’s the warm-room smell.

What works at home

• Blot, don’t rub, as soon as it happens. Paper towel, stand on it. Rubbing spreads it into a wider area.
• Enzyme cleaner (the pet-shop kind), applied generously so it reaches as deep as the urine did, then left to work for the time on the bottle. This is the only home product that breaks down uric acid.
• Cold water only. Heat sets protein stains.
• Repeat. One application rarely reaches the underlay.

What makes it worse

• Steam cleaners on urine: the heat bonds the smell in.
• Bleach or ammonia-based sprays: ammonia smells like urine to a dog, so they go back to the same spot.
• Perfumed carpet powders: they mask it for a week and clog the pile.

What professional extraction does differently

Hot-water extraction pushes a treatment solution through the fabric into the foam or underlay and pulls it back out with the dissolved residue, tens of litres of it for a sofa. You can see the water come out brown. It reaches the layer the spray never did. For old, repeated accidents I treat the spot first, then extract the whole piece so there is no clean patch that looks different.

When it can’t be saved

If urine has soaked repeatedly into carpet underlay over months, the underlay itself may need replacing; no cleaning gets crystals out of disintegrating foam. I’ll tell you that honestly after a look, rather than take the money.
