Sofa and Carpet Cleaning: How Often, How Long to Dry, and Is It Worth It?

Most sofas people are about to replace just need cleaning. The hoover was never going to get at what’s in them.

What a hoover leaves behind

A hoover takes what’s sitting on top. Underneath, in the fibres and the foam, there’s dust, skin, pet hair, spilt drinks and whatever the kids brought in — years of it. That’s what makes a sofa look grey and flat and gives a room a smell you stop noticing.

Hot-water extraction works differently. It pushes warm water and cleaning solution into the fabric and pulls it straight back out, along with the dirt. The first time people see the water that comes out of their own couch, they usually go quiet.

How often

As a rough rule:

  • Once a year for most homes.
  • Every six months if you have dogs or cats, small children, or someone in the house with allergies or asthma.
  • Stairs and landings show the wear first, because every foot in the house goes over them. They’re often worth doing even when the rooms aren’t.
  • Mattresses get forgotten entirely. They collect more than anything else in the house.

How long does it take to dry?

With proper extraction equipment, usually 2–4 hours for sofas and carpets. If I come in the morning, you’re sitting on it in the evening. Opening a window or putting the heating on speeds it up. Wool and thick-pile carpets can take a bit longer.

Will the stain come out?

Honestly — most of them, yes, and some surprise me. But not every one. A stain that’s been scrubbed with the wrong product, or bleach that’s taken the colour out, can’t be put back. Pet urine that has soaked into the foam can be treated and improved, but I won’t promise it’s gone before I’ve seen it.

A tip: before you attack a fresh spill, blot it — don’t rub. Rubbing pushes it deeper and spreads it.

Check the label first

Most sofas have a care tag under the cushions with a cleaning code. “W” means water-based cleaning is fine, “S” means solvent only, “W/S” means either, and “X” means hoover only. Send me a photo of it along with the sofa and I’ll know what we’re dealing with.

Cleaning versus replacing

A three-seater is €95, a fraction of what a new one costs, and it’s back in use the same day — no delivery date, no old one to get rid of. On the carpet & upholstery page there’s a calculator with prices for each item, from 2-seaters and corner sofas to mattresses and stairs.

If you’re booking a deep clean anyway, it makes sense to do the sofa and carpets on the same visit.

Send me a photo of the sofa or carpet and I’ll give you a fixed price — usually the same day.
